Reflections by IITians is a collection of 36 articles by well known alumni of IIT who share their rich experiences and ideologies in their journey through life. It makes for some very interesting and thought provoking reading.

The articles have been collated and published by Mr. Ram Krishnaswamy, from Sydney, Australia, himself a past student of IIT Madras. The book was officially released on Dec.19th 2008 at IIT Madras, during the PAN IIT meet, by the well known scientist Mr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, India and who was recently conferred the prestigious Padmashree Award by the Govt.of India.

We are extremely grateful to Mr.Ram and all the authors for their kindness in offering to donate the proceeds of the sale of the books to Jeevodaya.

WORLD HOSPICE DAY - 10th Oct. 2009


Dear friends,
Jeevodaya will be celebrating the World Hospice Day on Date -10th of October [saturday] at Time - 2pm -

Venue - MRF Auditorium - Loyola Collge, Nungambakkam

This is an occasion for all of us to meet . This is also a day to spread awareness about Palliative Care. We have organised a mini-cultural programme and an open house.

Patients and their relatives, past and present, doctors, nurses, social workers and volunteers of Jeevodaya are invited to participate.

It is open to the public also.

I request all of you to please attend without fail and bring your friends and relatives also. Your presence will be an encouragement for us to carry on the work we have started. Looking forward to seeing you all.

2. The IAPC Certificate Course in 'Essentials of Palliative Care' for 2009 starts on 1st June, 2009. It is a 8 week distance learning course with a 3 day contact session at the end of 4 weeks and evaluation after 8 weeks. Doctors with MBBS, and qualified nurses can apply. Dental Surgeons and House Officers are eligible to apply.Completed application forms,along with a DD for Rs.1000 [one thousand only] drawn in favour of the 'Indian Assn.of Palliative Care' payable at Calicut and a photocopy of the degree certificate should reach Jeevodaya by the 1st of May,2009. 3. Jeevodaya requires a fulltime doctor with MBBS qualification - must be trained/ willing to be trained in Palliative Care. An important criteria is that the candidate must be compassionate,must have the aptitude and willingness to work with advanced and terminal cancer patientsFamily quarters available. 30 of the 40 doctors and nurses who had registered for the June 2009 IAPC
certificate course in Essentials of Palliative Care took their exams on 8th August 2009. The contact sessions for these candidates were conducted in 2 batches - from 26th to 28th June and 10th to 12th of July 2009. Results will be published in IAPC web site - www.palliativecare.in



8th March 2009 - Distribution of Certificates by our President, Dr.Nanjunda Rao to the candidates who had successfully completed the Nov.2008, IAPC Course in Essentials of Palliative Care.

15th February 2009 - Our Hon.Medical Director, Dr.Manjula Krishnaswamy, delivered a lecture titled " Factors Contributing to Variability in Response to Opioids" at the 16th, National and International annual Conference of the Indian Assn.of Palliative Care, held at AIIMS,Delhi.

31st January 2009 - One day workshop for Social Work students from Hindu College. 30 MSW students attended.

29th January 2009 - Ms.GillyBurn, former Nurse Consultant WHO, currently with Cancer Relief India, brought a group of doctors and nurses for a visit to Jeevodaya. They were on an educational tour, visiting several Palliative Care centres in India

12th January 2009 - One day workshop for Nurses - attended by 20 students [1st year MSc Nursing] and 1 faculty from Madras Medical College

Jeevodaya conducted the third one day workshop in Palliative Care for nurses under the upgraded Training Centre Programme on the 12th of January, 2009.

The participants were 20 MSc Nursing [1st year]students and one faculty member from Madras Medical College of Nursing. They had one hour session each on Introduction to Palliative Care, Pain Management, Nursing Issues and Communication Skills. They were taken on a tour of Jeevodaya where they interacted with patients and they also had a demonstration of Jeevodaya’s method of bandage making.

The faculty consisted of Dr.Manjula Krishnaswamy, Dr.Pacifica Simon, Dr.Ponni , Sr.Dena and Sr.Lalitha Teresa.

The day ended with the screening of Jeevodaya’s Documentary, and distribution of Participation Certificates.

This workshop has a special significance, for it is the first time that Jeevodaya is officially conducting a programme for a Government Institution.
